TRAVAS CLIFTON
modcup coffee co.
Founder + CEO
Born and raised in the UK, Travas has been living in the USA for 10 years now.

While taking a break from auctioneering in 2012, Travas was in Toronto looking after his then 16-month-old daughter. It was here he experienced his first ever head spinning coffee moment: A Balinese naturally processed coffee that was all strawberries and dark chocolate. That experience was enough to force him to put the gavel down and go head-first into the specialty coffee rabbit hole.

Until he entered he didn’t even know coffee was a fruit, never mind that coffee could taste like blueberry pancakes. On his return to his home in Jersey City it quickly became apparent that there was no specialty roaster in the area and thus nowhere he could get these exotic FRESH coffees. A born salesman and entrepreneur, he quickly set about creating a brand and putting a team around him with the same passion and zeal; modcup and #drinkmoderncoffee were born.

JUSTIN HICKS
modcup coffee co.
Roaster + Partner
Growing up with midwest roots in Dayton, Ohio, Justin's coffee habits started at an early age in the office of his grandfather's piano moving business. Even at a young age, sick days were spent drinking his grandparents' devil's brew.

His fascination with coffee continued into his college years where he began working for a local roaster. This experience led to a fork in a road; stay with the florescent lights in the medical field or follow a new path digging deeper into the coffee industry. In 2012 he dropped out of college and bought a coffee roaster.

Roasting in a garage for friends and family whose response was exceptional, he realized that this passion/hobby might actually pay off. In late 2012 he decided to take a class at Boot Coffee to learn from a leading expert in the industry. It was here that he met Travas who spun him a wild idea of coffee, vintage trucks and 60's music.

By May 2013 his bags, his records, and most importantly, his coffee roaster were in Jersey City, NJ. A new chapter had begun.
